As the Senate Elections of Panjab University for the year 2024 comes close, an appeal for the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct has been submitted to the Chancellor of Panjab University, by Professor Tarun Ghai.
Through the medium of a letter submitted to Hon’ble Vice President and Chancellor, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, Professor Tarun Ghai argued,that while the Model Code of Conduct, is applicable to all democratic bodies including the Parliament and State Assemblies by default, it is notably not applicable to the Panjab University Senate Elections. However, this code of conduct, is indeed applicable to the Panjab University Student Council Elections, when the elections are declared.
Professor Tarun Ghai, also seeks the intervention of the Chancellor, in the same way as it was in the PU Senate Elections of 2020. Further, he requests for the prevention of misuse of position, by the current senators who might influence voters and selection panel members, while on visit to different colleges as the member of the inspection committee.
In 2020, the same request, i.e. an appeal for the implementation of Model Code of Conduct in PU Senate Elections had been made by Professor Ghai, on which further a syndicate meeting was conducted and it was decided that the Model Code of Conduct, would be applicable to the Senate Elections of 2020.
