India has continuously evolved in the field of medicine, and we recently achieved a milestone that can be a boon to many patients with chronic liver problems.
The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has successfully performed a live liver transplant surgery, raising hope among patients.
Liver transplantation is a complex surgical procedure aimed at saving the lives of patients suffering from chronic liver disorders. It can involve either of the two procedures: Decreased Donor Liver Transplant (DDLT) and Live Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT). A surgical team from the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at PGI recently performed a successful LDLT surgery. In this procedure, a close relative donates a portion of their liver to help save a loved one's life. Typically, they donate one part of their liver, retaining about 40-45% of their liver, while the recipient receives approximately 55-60% of a regular liver. Since the liver has exceptional regenerative capacity, it regrows to its normal size in both the donor and the recipient.
We take pride in congratulating the surgical team responsible for this remarkable medical procedure. This achievement has indeed instilled hope in many people.
