The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), the most sought after hospital has come under the radar of the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) for violating the rules and guidelines of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) due to discharge of wastewater.
In investigation CPCC had found that the PGI had been releasing untreated wastewater into the sewerage system of the Municipal Corporation for past many years and had given PGI a show cause notice six months ago as to answer the questions of why a sewerage treatment plan (STP) and effluent treatment plan (ETP) even though it treats lakhs of patients.
Recently the CPCC again issued a show-cause notice due to failure to get a response but to no avail. The CPCC then took up the matter with UT Adviser and directed PGI to set up both the plans.
An official said the PGI was the biggest polluter in the city and PGI might have to pay environmental compensation if it fails to install treatment plants soon.
