India is a country of diverse religious communities, each having its own personal laws, rules and regulations. However, citizens of India also need to be treated under the same set of civil rules, to ensure equality and eliminate discrimination on the basis of religion.
The uniform civil code, is a constitutional mandate, which aims at equality in India. One Law, One nation. Under this, all the laws, related to marriage, inheritance, family, land etc. will be applicable to all Indians, regardless of their ethnicity or religion.
It can also be noted, if applied, UCC would impact income tax laws and succession plans in India. Politicians argue, that UCC would violate the constitutional freedom to practice the religion of choice, and suppress religious minorities.
With conflicting opinions, government is seeking public’s opinion, till 6th July.
