The Panjab University Teachers' Association (PUTA) has expressed concerns about the potential arbitrary appointment of the Director of Research & Development Cell at Panjab University.
In a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, PUTA requested that the appointment follow the "No Pick & Choose" policy and be made based on seniority alone, as it has been the tradition followed by the University. The letter highlighted the importance of transparency and adherence to established conventions and norms to promote academic credentials and instill trust in the teaching community.
PUTA demanded to maintain transparency and discourage the politics of backdoor operations. The recent appointment of a Professor as Director, Research, in supersession of a very accomplished scholar and senior teacher Professor Rumina Sethi has sent wrong signals, and PUTA called for immediate intervention to save the University from unwarranted arbitrariness.
The Vice Chancellor's office has released a statement explaining that the selection of the Director was made based on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the senior-most teachers from different departments and the candidate's qualifications and experience. The statement reiterated the administration's commitment to promoting and strengthening research activities in the university.
The issue of the arbitrary appointment of Director Research & Development Cell at Panjab University has caused concern among the teaching community. The response of the University administration to PUTA's concerns remains to be seen, but PUTA has reposed faith in the Vice Chancellor's leadership and requested that the principle of seniority be followed in the appointment of the Director of Research & Development Cell to avoid any unnecessary discrimination and heartburn among the community.
Earlier, Prof. Rumina Sethi also wrote the letter to Chancellor regarding the same.
