Summon Sent to 92 Student Leaders
Amidst concerns of potential unrest during student elections, Chandigarh Police has registered cases against 92 student leaders under Section 107-150 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) for breach of peace.
This list includes 70 active members of 13 student organizations in Panjab University (PU) and 22 from DAV College. Indian National Lok Dal's (INLD) student wing INSO tops the list with 11 members, followed by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)'s student wing SOI and ABVP, both with 10 representatives. AAP's CYSS and Congress' NSUI account for 9 and 7 names respectively. Other names come from parties like PUSU, HPSU, SFS, USO, HSA, SOPU, PSU Lalkar, and Sath PU.
Police presented the prepared list to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's court on Monday. Summons were issued to all these student leaders to appear in court on Wednesday.
As per the schedule, elections will be held in Panjab University and 11 colleges of the city on September 6.
To maintain law and order during the student elections, police have given specific instructions to student organization leaders. On Monday, DSP Central Gurumukh Singh chaired a meeting with these leaders and PU administration. DSW Jatinder Grover, Sector-11 SHO Malkit Singh and Sector 14 beat Incharge Gurwinder Singh were also present. The leaders have been advised to ensure the security band is filled out as that's the only way bail will be granted.
The security band period is also limited to the next six months, during which any involvement in any disputes would lead to bail being revoked.
