Chandigarh Teachers Seek Fair Pay and Promotions
In Chandigarh's educational community, teachers are coming together to address some ongoing problems they face. They want to shift the focus away from discussions about when they retire and instead address more immediate concerns.
Their main issue is the delay in getting the 7th Central Pay Commission (7th CPC) implemented for teachers in private colleges. These teachers have been waiting for a while to get the salary increases promised by the 7th CPC, and it hasn't happened yet. This is especially hard for temporary teachers who have seen no change in their salaries.Another problem is with promotions based on the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS). These promotions are important for teachers' career growth, but they haven't been happening since 2018, causing frustration among teachers.
There's also a difference in allowances between government college teachers and those in private colleges. Government college teachers get more allowances, leaving private college teachers feeling left out.Chandigarh colleges also struggle to follow the UGC regulations, which causes confusion and uncertainty in academics.Additionally, non-NET Ph.D. teachers are not getting the recognition they deserve for their academic achievements.
The Department of Higher Education (DHE) office is very slow in processing certain requests, like advance increments, which has caused financial problems for many teachers. But there is some hope. The Punjab & Chandigarh College Teachers' Union (PCCTU) has written a letter to the Secretary of Education, asking for solutions to issues like CAS promotions and the payment of 7th CPC arrears.
In a positive development, arrears for teachers in 14 government and private colleges have been approved, benefiting around 750 teachers.Chandigarh's teachers are hopeful that their concerns will be addressed soon, bringing positive changes to the education system. They are waiting for official notices and solutions to finally resolve these problems.
