The majority of Punjab and Haryana saw a cold wave on Tuesday, along with extremely dense fog, which cut visibility to only 50 metres. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh, has issued advisories for nine districts in Haryana and 11 districts in Punjab till December 24 as well as a "red" warning for severe fog for the upcoming days.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated on Tuesday that all schools in the state will open at 10 am from December 21 to January 21 due to dense to very severe fog for the second morning in a row. He also said that the schools' closure time will not change.
The presence of fog on Tuesday also had an impact on airline operations, with three flights from Chandigarh (headed for Kullu, Delhi, and Ahmedabad) being cancelled and 15 more being delayed. Several trains were also running more than five hours late.
For the districts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, and Patiala, IMD Chandigarh predicted extremely severe fog from Tuesday to Saturday. Up till December 24, Sangrur, Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, and Fatehgarh Sahib are all under a severe to very dense fog warning.
In Haryana, alert has been issued for Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Kharbala, Rohtak, Sonipat, Panipat, Fatehabad, Hisar and Bhiwani districts where dense to very dense fog will be witnessed in the next five days.
