Monkeys have been a common sight in Panjab University, from residential area to different departments, and freely roam inside hostels. Finally, now a solution has been found to the monkey menance , Langur Mimics who scare away these simians.
This duty has been assigned to three persons - Rafiq, Munna, Sabir. All three belong to the same family and got this skill passed to them over generations. They reach campus at 6AM and stay here until 6PM.
“Monkeys fear Langur so as soon as we make the sound, the simians scurry away” said Munna.
Rafiq who is of 45, seconds him, said, "when they had started the job, a month ago, many monkeys used to roam here”.
Panjab University Teachers' Association vice-president Suman Sumi, a resident of Sector 14 said, “Earlier, monkeys used to be on our doors. Now, we rarely see them in the residential area”. PU Senator Parveen Goyal also earlier requested that" the monkey menance should be dealt with as residents were concerned about it".
To this problem, a committee was formed, chaired by Goyal having representatives of campus residents as well.
Goyal said, “Residents were having numerous issues due to monkeys. We surveyed the area and suggested that these people should be involved to deal with the monkey menace. We have got positive feedback from the residents now.”
Even residents of hostels are feeling some relief after this, as monkeys used to steal a lot of things. Similar conditions were at student center where monkeys used to steal the eatables. We hope that conditions will be safer in upcoming days.
