Having convocation is one of the dreams of every student. Since long, apart from toppers students of PU campus have to collect their degrees from the office now but now Panjab University (PU) has recently witnessed a decision about significant change in its convocation ceremonies. The decision, approved by the Director of University Instruction (DUI), allows each department within the university to organize its own convocation ceremony.
Currently in the convocation ceremonies held , only toppers from PU and various colleges receive their degrees and the remaining students are not included. This issue was emphasized by Dr. Gurmeet Singh, a Senate member and former chairperson of the Hindi department. He argued that there should be a convocation specifically for all the students of each department regardless of their position. Even affiliated colleges have their own convocation.
The Vice-Chancellor (VC) responded by a circular stating that each department can arrange its own convocation through the respective dean. It is important to note that a department's convocation can only take place after the main university convocation. However, no formal policy regarding department-wise convocations has been established by PU as of yet.
The Faculty of Law, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, and Engineering Institute have been already conducting their convocations separately. Organizing a convocation event requires adequate planning and budget allocation. Therefore, departments interested in conducting their convocation ceremonies need to carefully consider their financial requirements.
Even though some staff members are still doubtful about the same and are requesting for proper modifications since deans belong to faculty and not any particular department, this still remains a great news for all the students as they'll now have the opportunity to be a part of the Departmental Ceremonies.
