Farmers Protest Again: Is There Any End to This?
Farmers' unions recently announced a three-day 'Rail Roko' protest starting on Thursday, September 28, 2023. Several farmers' organizations have made this decision in an effort to have some of their demands met by the Central government. These demands include the waiver of debts, a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) for all crops, and financial aid for losses caused by recent floods.
However, the main protest is taking place in Punjab, with support from unions in other northern states. As a result, various public transport systems have been disrupted. In Punjab, trains on various routes have been canceled, leading to chaos among the people.
A similar situation recently occurred when the Delhi-Chandigarh route was blocked in Ambala. Additionally, farmers clashed with the police in Mohali, resulting in heated arguments between the two groups. Farmers staged sit-ins on the roads, disrupting the smooth flow of traffic.
The farmers are demanding financial relief packages for individuals affected by floods across northern India, a legally binding assurance of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crop categories, comprehensive debt waivers, and the withdrawal of cases related to agitation in Delhi, among other things.
