In retaliation to Khap Panchayats' (caste councils) demands to the Bharatiya Janata Party - Jannayak Janta Party government to amend the Hindu Marriage Act outlaw intra-gotra and intra-village marriage.
The Haryana government has initiated amendment of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The Government's Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, mentioned the matter to the Principal Secretary, Citizen Resources Information Department (CRID) for further action, acting on the ultimatum submitted by the Bharat Bhoomi Bachao Sangharsh Samiti.
According to the record, Kandela stated that specific marriages like those within the same lineage, within the local community, and among neighboring villages are considered unacceptable in civil society according to Haryanvi traditions and practices; same-gotra(clan) and same-village marriages were in contention with the social norms in society and they had submitted a representation to the state government for amendment of HMA in accordance to the khap Panchayats' demands.
Intra-gotra and intra-village weddings result in humiliation and mental torment for the parents whose son or daughter enters into such marital bonds that violate social standards he stated.
Dalal had also sent a representation to the state government last month, demanding that weddings between persons from neighbouring villages be deemed unlawful in addition to intra-gotra and intra-village marriages.
