Hindus get right to worship in cellars of the Gyanvapi Mosque
In a controversial ruling, a Varanasi court on Wednesday allowed Hindus to offer prayers in the cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque complex.
The site of Gyanvapi mosque is claimed by both Hindus and Muslims as a religious site. This ruling came out of a plea filed by a Shailendra Vyas, where he sought to worship the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, which he claimed were placed in the cellar by his grandfather.
The court also allowed Vyas to nominate a priest from the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust to perform the puja along with him.
The dispute over the site has been pending in various courts since 1991, when a civil suit was filed by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The Muslim side is planning to appeal this decision in the Allahabad High Court.
