India has dropped to rank 93rd among 180 countries in the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International on Tuesday. The index gave India a score of 39 out of 100, down from 40 in 2022.
A score of 0 means highly corrupt, while a score of 100 means very clean. The global average score remained unchanged at 43.
The report highlighted some of the challenges that India faces in tackling corruption. It noted that corruption undermines governments' ability to protect people and erodes public trust.
The top performers in the 2023 CPI were Denmark, Finland, New Zealand and Norway. The bottom performers were Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Venezuela. China ranked 80th with a score of 41, while Pakistan ranked 119th with a score of 31.
