The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's commissioner for children's rights, for war crimes related to the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The ICC's decision is based on evidence from a New York Times investigation and highlights the importance of holding those responsible for war crimes accountable, regardless of their status or position.
While the warrants are unlikely to result in immediate arrests or prosecutions, they may increase pressure on the international community to hold Russia accountable for its actions.
