In a turn of events, Mallikarjun Kharge takes the rein of Indian National Congress as its first non Gandhian president. Elections for the coveted position were held on 17th October whose final counting concluded with a straight flush for Mr. Kharge securing as many as 7897 votes leaving Shashi Tharoor with only a meagre 1000 votes.
Mr. Kharge will be the second President of Congress party from Karnataka, after S Nijalingappa. He will be assuming the position replacing Sonia Gandhi after Diwali celebrations at Congress headquarters in presence of all the senior most leaders of the party.
