Panjab University is facing a crisis in its language departments, with a shortage of teachers and low student enrollment. Because of this, many language courses are in danger of being closed. On Sunday, The University decided not to allow new students to enroll in any courses offered by the French department due to a shortage of teachers.
Unfortunately, the admission situation is not good for most language departments, except for English. The Russian department also does not have a teacher, and its responsibilities have been given to the chairperson of the Urdu department. Moreover, many courses in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Punjabi have had empty seats for years. Although the university reduced the number of seats in the Sanskrit course this session, students still have not shown interest in the MA course, with only 19 students out of 50 being admitted.
In the meantime, the Chinese and Tibetan Department have had no students in some courses, with no students enrolling in all 14 seats of the Diploma in Proficiency for Interpretership Tibetan. The number of students in other language courses is also low, such as French, German, and Urdu.
The university is struggling due to lack of teachers and is failing to attract students to language courses. Urgent measures are needed to address this issue.
