Panjab University administration struggles in adoption to NEP

Future of NEP at PU

CBCS was introduced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2015 to facilitate credit transfer between higher education institutions and provide students with the flexibility to choose courses based on their interests and aptitude. However, despite being introduced eight years ago, CBCS remains limited to the science departments at Panjab University, casting doubts on the fate of NEP.

Similarly, the implementation of NEP at Panjab University is currently limited to undergraduate courses on campus, excluding affiliated colleges. This partial adoption of NEP raises concerns about potential discrepancies and inconsistencies within the university if the policy is not fully implemented.

During a recent senate meeting, members discussed the university's track record in implementing schemes effectively, emphasizing the need for complete implementation of CBCS across all departments. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) also highlighted the university's incomplete implementation of CBCS in its last report, urging the university to fully adopt the system. With the upcoming NAAC evaluations in August, the university administration faces mounting pressure to provide detailed plans on how they will ensure the proper execution of NEP and schemes like CBCS.

The partial adoption of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) at Panjab University and the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) have raised concerns about the university's commitment to these educational reforms

An anonymous PU source, expressed concerns about the lack of clarity regarding the implementation of NEP, particularly regarding the potential shortening of the two-year master's program to one year. The lack of a clear roadmap for NEP raises doubts about the university's ability to fully adopt the policy, similar to the incomplete implementation of CBCS. The university is also facing challenges such as a shortage of faculty and infrastructure to meet the demands of NEP.

There have been attempts to seek clarification, but the administration did not provide any comments on the present status of these issues.
