Tea, samosas and lunch will still be available in the canteens of about ten departments of Panjab University. The decision of the PU administration to close the canteens running in the cycle shed of the departments and giving it to private hands has been postponed after strong protests in the campus.
A meeting of the High Power Committee constituted by the PU administration to give the canteens to the private brands was held on Wednesday. There was a fierce debate among the officers present in the meeting regarding the whole matter. In the meeting, teachers, non-teaching and other employees of Panjab University also raised many questions on the move of administration.
PU Pulse raised the issue of closing of canteens in university campus, referring it as "Lifeline" of students, after which there was a strong protest against the decision of the PU administration to close the canteens without information. In the end, the committee agreed to prepare a fresh proposal.
According to sources, now further action will be taken in this entire matter only after taking feedback from teachers, students and employees of all departments. On the other hand, the decision to close the 30 to 40 years old canteen was also proposed for approval in the syndicate and senate. As soon as information about the closure of the old canteen circulated, many student organizations warned the administration for protests.
In view of all the sections of PU, at present, the PU administration has put the decision to close the canteen on hold. Further decision will be taken after start of academic session.
