Today, Panjab University Senate will meet and the agenda of the meeting includes approval of Union Grant Commission (UGC) guidelines for allowing students to pursue two academic programmes simultaneously under the National Education Policy-2020.
Under the NEP, a student will be applicable to pursue two courses. Additionally, if a student wants to pursue two degrees, they needs to submit an undertaking at the time of admission furthermore register at the academic Bank of credits.
If it happens, PU will be the first in the region to incorporate this. As per the Panel's head, Prof. Rajat Sandhir, “This will help students to add more diversity to their academic portfolio."
There are some challenges in implementing this policy, such as to shortage of qualified faculty and inadequate infrastructure. Currently, PU is facing a shortage of 738 faculty members.
The minutes of the meeting will be sent for approval by the Vice Chancellor. In sync with this, the minutes will be sent for further approval from the Syndicate.
In the words of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, "Students will no longer need a migration certificate, which was previously required to enrol in additional courses that the institution did not provide. Prior to the NEP too, students used to pursue dual degrees, but now they will be authenticated and valued.”
Following will be other points of discussion, the ones related to the webcast of the Senate’s meeting, minutes of the screening/selection committee with regard to finalising promotion of technical officers-III to technical officers-IV and the Intellectual Property Right Policy-2023 of the Centre for Industry Institute partnership programme.
