Flash floods in North Sikkim resulted in a tragic incident, claiming the lives of 22 people and causing extensive damage. The floods worsened due to torrential rain, leading to a series of landslides and massive destruction of the highway between Mangan and Chungthang.
According to data, 15 members of the Border Road Organization (BRO), 5 members of the Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP) personnel, and 2 civilians working on the Teesta-Urja hydel project lost their lives. This incident has alarmed the authorities, and hence, the Pawan Chamling government has issued alerts along riverbanks to minimize further risks.
Considering Sikkim's past and history, it is notable that this tragedy occurred a year after a 6.Destruction earthquake hit Sikkim, resulting in the loss of 70 lives and the destruction of villages, with its epicenter located at Chungthang.
Currently, there are reports of 30 individuals missing, and this number may increase as the risk and water level rise. With this, the efforts by the Army and other relief teams are incessantly hampered by rainfall, with heavy rain preventing the take-off of four helicopters.
The rescue teams are trying their best, but the situation remains critical. The government is making significant efforts to cope with this disaster.
