On August 23, 2023, a group of students and faculty members from the Department of Physics at Punjab University, gathered at the BM Anand Auditorium to witness a historic moment in India's space exploration. They watched the live broadcast of Chandrayan 3, India's third lunar mission, as it successfully landed on the south pole of the moon.
The participants were given a brief introduction about the significance and objectives of Chandrayan 3 along with the significance of the mission as a follow-up mission to Chandrayan 2, which failed to land on the moon in 2019 due to a technical glitch.
The audience watched with excitement and anticipation as the lander module, named Vikram, performed its final de-orbiting maneuver and initiated its powered descent. They cheered and applauded as Vikram successfully touched down on the lunar surface at around 6:04 pm IST, making India the fourth country after the US, China, and Russia to achieve this feat.
They also witnessed the deployment of the rover module, named Pragyan, which rolled out of Vikram and began its exploration of the landing site.
The event concluded with a Q&A session from the audience about Chandrayan 3.
