Punjab’s Finance Minister, Mr Harpal Cheema has presented the budget for 2023-24 in the Assembly. The total budget is of Rs 1.96 lakh crore and the areas of focus are health, agriculture and education.
Some highlights include : Rs 10,523 crore for Police, Rs 43 crore for 7 new maternal and child care hospitals, Rs 4781 crore for Health and Family Welfare, Rs 1015 crore for Medical Education and Research, Rs 35 crore for Sports infrastructure, Rs 13888 crore for agriculture and various other schemes and scholarships.
Rs 3,319 crore has been allocated for rural development and panchayats i.e. an increase of 11% over the previous year, Rs 15 crore proposed for upgradation and for setting up of two new galleries of War Memorial Complex in Amritsar and Rs 200 crore was proposed in FY 2023-24 for upgradation of the schools into Schools of Eminence.
The total budget size has witnessed an increase of about 20%. Moreover, one crore saplings are to be planted under the ‘Green Punjab Mission’ and a budget of Rs 30 crore has been planned to encourage students to propose start-up ideas.
This is the first full budget of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government which came to power in Punjab last year with a thumping majority.
