The UT administration issued a notice on Friday, July 7th, 2023, announcing an upcoming increase in road taxes for petrol and diesel vehicles in Chandigarh. The administration clarified that the one-time road tax would be based on the actual vehicle price, excluding GST and other taxes, rather than the discounted price at which the vehicle was purchased. However, owners of electric and CNG vehicles would be exempted from this tax hike in the UT.
According to the notice, there will be a hike in road tax ranging from 4% to 6% for both four-wheelers and two-wheelers if purchased within the UT. These revised taxes will come into effect on July 11th. Specifically, for four-wheelers purchased in Chandigarh with a cost up to 15 lacs, the tax will increase from 6% to 10%, while those costing more than 15 lacs will experience a hike of 8% to 12%. Conversely, if a four-wheeler is registered elsewhere, a 12% tax will be charged for vehicles costing up to 15 lacs and a 14% tax for vehicles worth more than 15 lacs. Regarding two-wheelers bought in Chandigarh, the tax increase will range from 3% to 8% for vehicles under 1 lakh and 4% to 10% for those costing more than 1 lakh.
The rise in road taxes within the UT has caused concern among residents due to the increased expenses associated with vehicle registration. Previously, Chandigarh boasted one of the lowest road taxes for non-electric vehicles. This hike has resulted in road taxes in the UT surpassing those of Punjab and Haryana.
