A meeting was held on March 4 by the Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee in which they directed the UT administration to request the authorities of Panjab University (PU) and the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) to spare a small section of land on respective premises so that there could be facility creation of entry and exit points for the underpass and allow more space for pedestrian movement.
However, this became a blockage for the people as both the authorities of the institution had rejected the request to give the part of the land confirmed by an official of the Engineering Department. He added that they would take up this issue again in the next meeting and the final decision would be taken by the members of the committee.
VP Singh Badnore, the UT administrator had given in-principle approval for the construction of the underpass after the suggestion by traffic police and the Rail India Technical and Economic Service as there was huge rush of people between the hospital and university in November 2019.
The underpass would be 15 meters wide and 38 meters long including 12 shops which will likely have a budget of Rs. 7.20 crore.
