
Bharat Jodo Yatra is an ongoing mass movement started by the Indian National Congress on September 7, 2022 at Kanyakumari and will end at Srinagar.The yatra entered Punjab from Shambhu border on Jan 10. It will stay in the state till Jan 19th.
The journey started at 6am on January 11 from New Dana Mandi, Sirhind, Fatehgarh Sahib District. Rahul Gandhi firstly paid obeisance at Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib. After a break, the evening leg started from Khalsa School Ground, Mandi Gobindgarh. First day Journey ended at Barmalipur in Ludhiana district.
The Yatra started again on January 12 from Jugiana, proceeded towards Dhandari Khurd of Ludhiana. The day ended when the yatra finally reached Samrala Chowk where Rahul Gandhi addressed the public and a large number of supporters welcomed him.January 13th was a rest day on account of the Lohri Festival.
On January 14, the journey began from Ladowal but was suspended in between due to the sudden demise of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary who was walking alongside Rahul Gandhi during the yatra to Goraya, Jalandhar. He died of a heart attack. The yatra was then to be resumed after 24 hours as a mark of respect.
The yatra resumed on January 15 from the Khalsa College ground, Jalandhar. During the march around 3pm, Balkaur Singh Sidhu, father of late punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala joined Rahul Gandhi in the journey. He also gifted Rahul a portrait of Moosewala. He had earlier visited him to candle the death of his son. Before the end of the day, Major General(retired) Sheonan Singh, nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, also walked with Gandhi in Jalandhar. He wished him good luck saying that he will always support him. The yatra stayed in Adampur for the night. The journey will resume again on 16th from Kharal Kalan village of Adampur.
With the Punjab leg of the Yatra nearing its end, Rahul Gandhi, on his Facebook post, wrote about his feelings regarding the time he spent in the state. “Even nature’s gifts must be nurtured and worked upon for them to yield benefits. It is the tapasya of the people of Punjab that has turned this land of great opportunity into a land of prosperity, over time. As I walk through this remarkable state, every heart I connect with has a common story to tell, a story of relentless efforts to put at the country’s interests, a story of true love for India,” he said. Bharat Jodo Yatra for Panjab will end on January 19 at Pathankot and then move forwards.
