Chandigarh Administration Holds Back Double Parking Rates
UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit has intervened to halt the proposed plan by the Municipal Corporation (MC) to implement double parking fees for vehicles registered outside the Tricity.
During the Administrator’s Advisory Council meeting, Purohit expressed strong opposition to the concept of differential parking rates based on vehicle origin. He directed the civic body to immediately withdraw the proposal, asserting that such disparity should not be allowed.
Mayor Anup Gupta announced a review of the proposal in the upcoming House meeting. The MC had earlier approved the double parking charges for out-of-Tricity four-wheelers, a decision that faced widespread criticism.
Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the head of the Punjab Congress, presented a letter to the Governor regarding the same issue. SAD leader Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema also opposed the move.
Residents, political leaders, and experts contended that such a move was unjust and detrimental to tourism and city accessibility.
