Chandigarh Metro with a new route: Mohali, New Chandigarh to be added, construction can be started in 2027.
Chandigarh Metro route of about 77km has been approximately finalized in a joint meeting of Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana administrations held on Tuesday. The detailed project report (DPR) for this phase is expected to be ready by March 2024.
The estimated cost of this project in the first phase will be around 10,570 crore rupees. The state government will contribute 20% of the funding, and the central government will provide another 20%. The remaining 60% will be procured as a loan.
The aim of the first phase is to construct the metro lines between 2027 and 2037. It will connect New Chandigarh to Saharanpur, ISBT Panchkula to Panchkula Extension, Rock Garden to ISBT Chandigarh, passing through the Industrial Area and reaching up to Zirakpur.
Out of this 11-kilometer extension, approximately 6 kilometers will stretch from Parol in New Chandigarh, and the remaining 5 kilometers will connect Panchkula ISBT to Panchkula Extension in Sector 20.
These sections were originally intended to be part of the second phase of the metro project but were brought forward to be included in the current phase based on the recommendations of the respective state governments of Punjab and Haryana.
