News of relief from Chandigarh PGI: Center approves kidney transplantation of deceased person to Urology Department.
Cadaveric transplantation, as opposed to kidney donation from a living donor to a recipient with renal failure, involves taking an organ from a deceased donor. Due to supply and demand issues, waiting times are typically longer because kin approval is needed before organs can be collected. The patients who are unable to receive a kidney transplant from a live donor, however, have a good option now.
"The approval of cadaveric transplantation is a significant milestone for the Urology Department and will have a positive impact on the lives of patients.
The department’s ability to provide this vital service will ensure patients receive the best care, improving their chances of a successful outcome and allowing them to lead fulfilling lives. The waiting period for renal transplant has already started to reduce,” said Prof Vivek Lal, PGI Director.
Live and cadaveric renal transplants have both been handled by PGI's Renal Transplant Department so far. 3,221 patients with renal failure are waiting for transplants at PGI right now.
Since February 20, the urology department has already completed three successful live transplants. Patients' waiting times will be cut short, thanks to the cadaveric transplant service at the urology department for the allowance.
