City Beautiful Finds Itself Lagging Behind in the Clean Air Survey of 2023
In the Clean Air Survey of 2023, conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board, Chandigarh finds itself ranked 22nd for air quality. The survey, known as the Swach Vayu Survekshan, assesses cities based on several parameters, including solid waste management, road dust management, construction and demolition waste management, vehicular emissions control, industrial emission control, other emission reduction measures, public awareness programs, and improvements in PM 10 concentration over the past year.
Despite cities like Mumbai and Delhi ranking in the top 10, it's disappointing that Chandigarh, often referred to as the "City Beautiful," received a score of only 158 out of 200. When asked about this poor performance, UT officials attributed the city's poor air quality mainly to high vehicular density, burning of dry leaves, roadside dust, litter from trees, and the operation of generator sets. They also noted that the concentration of particulate matter exceeds the permissible limit in the city.
Considering these key factors, it is crucial for both authorities and citizens to align themselves and take action to improve the city's air quality and address the pollution problem.
