Controversy over Parking rates in Chandigarh, SAD and Congress leaders appeals Governor
As The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation agreed to double the charge for vehicles registered outside the tricity while just slightly raising the fee for vehicles registered within it during Tuesday's House meeting.
Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the head of the Punjab Congress, wrote to the Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Friday, pleading him to overturn the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation's decision to charge double parking fees for cars coming from outside the tricity. The Chandigarh MC agreed to quadruple the charge for automobiles registered outside the tricity during Tuesday's House meeting, despite only imposing a slight tax increase on tricity autos.
Following the UT administration's approval, the revised tariffs will go into effect. Additionally, MC voted to waive the parking fee for all two-wheelers and electric four-wheelers (until March 31, 2027).
"It is sad to see the Governor's silence on the issue of grave concern, because the move will negatively affect those commuting on a daily basis to Chandigarh to make a living, study, receive medical treatment, or for other chores," Warring said.
The Congressman charged the BJP with deliberately attempting to undermine Punjab's claim to Chandigarh. He claimed Chandigarh was the capital of Punjab and that charging twice the parking fees to residents of the state was totally unfair.
In a tweet, SAD leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said the Shiromani Akali Dal had already opposed the move in the house where its city president and municipal councilor Hardeep Singh Buterla strongly objected to it, highlighting the negative impact on the daily commuters between the state of Punjab and UT Chandigarh.
The SAD demanded that the decision should be reversed without any delay.
