Being a developing city, Chandigarh owns a high rank among cities having the highest number of vehicles on an individual basis. But every coin has two sides. More vehicles has led to an increase in pollution levels and traffic jams in the last decade.
The Chandigarh Trust came up with an environment friendly solution to combat the problem with an aim to decongest Chandigarh roads. A mass rapid transmit system is planned to set up in order to facilitate an alternative public transport system.
The proposal has been led by Satnam Singh Sandhu, founder of Chandigarh University and Chairman of the UT Standing Committee On Environment to honourable Dharam Pal Singh (IAS). Governor of Punjab and U .T Administrator was also present in the meeting, today at the Raj Bhavan.
In Satnam Singh Sandhu's words "We have proposed to transform N-choe which is a seasonal stream that passes through various sectors originating from the Civil Secretariat. The N-Choe pass through Sector 2, Sector 10, Sector 16, Sector 23, Sector 26, Sector 42, sector 53 with a total length of 13.4 km". Moreover an electric tram is also being planned to be built that will run through the passage of N- Choe to accelerate the life of daily commuters of Chandigarh city.
