Governor Purohit's rejection over flat construction scheme leaves aspiring homeowners in the UT, disheartened.
Chandigarh Housing Board, Sec 53, had earlier proposed a scheme for constructing 340 flats. This scheme was to be launched on 15th Aug, 2023 but recently this proposal has been put on hold by Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Punjab and administrator of Chandigarh.
As per this scheme, there would have been 192– 3BHK, 100–2BHK and 48 flats for people belonging to the EWS. These flats were estimated to be available for allotment by 2026.
This scheme was first disapproved in 2018. It was re-proposed this year, but now it seems that owning a flat in the UT will still be a dream for many. It was a huge project, for which the transaction of 200 crore rupees to the tender has been withheld for now.
According to Mr. Purohit, this project is not much needed. He stated that keeping the conditions of Chandigarh in mind, the government should save the land for putting it to more important use in future.
Overall, the move has sparked debate and differing opinions on the best approach to manage land resources and provide affordable housing opportunities for the residents.
