MC Chandigarh imposed strict penalties for institutions which are not complying with SWM (Solid Waste Management) norms. The list includes, PU, PGI, sector 26 market committee and GMCH-32.
As per the officials, these institutions need to adhere to SWM Rules 2016, which clearly states that the wet and bulk waste of generators should be processed in their premises. Violators clearly did not comply with this.
Imposed penalties amount to Rs. 3.22 lakh for GMCH-32, Rs. 3.2 lakh for sector 26 market committee, Rs. 2.8 lakh for PGI and Rs. 88,000 for PU. It will be recovered in addition to the water bills.
As per the MC commissioner Anindita Mitra, "We are bound to follow the SWM rules. We had sent multiple notices in the past to all these institutions asking them to process their wet waste inside their premises, but they did not act accordingly. Penalties, imposed as per the bylaws, have been clubbed in water bills as a different head."
This is a big step towards improvement in the overall ranking of the City Beautiful in 'Swacchta Survekshan'.
