The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on June 27 gave a green nod to the Tricity Metro Project across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. The comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) received in-principle approval from Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab in April 2023 and was submitted for review only a month ago, with an aim to tackle the increasing traffic in the area and boost connectivity between the three cities.
The project will cover a distance of 39 kilometers and will exclude the heritage sectors from Sector 1 to 30, with an estimated cost of ₹10,570 crore. The Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) has been requested to prepare a detailed phase-wise project report (DPR) for further consideration of funds.
The development plan consists of two phases. The first phase will span across 2027 to 2037 and will cover routes from: Sarangpur to Panchkula ISBT; Rock Garden to Zirakpur ISBT via Mohali Industrial Area and the Airport; Grain Market, Sector 39 to Transport Nagar, Sector 26. The implementation of the second phase will take place after 2037 and will contain 4 additional routes-- Panchkula ISBT to Panchkula Extension; Paraul, New Chandigarh to Sarangpur; Airport Chowk to Manakpur Kallar; Zirakpur ISBT to Pinjore ISBT.
In order to promote public transport, the UT administration has also planned for 7 straight bus corridors. The CMP also focuses on construction of bus terminals, bus depots, improvements at busy intersections, road infrastructure, and other infrastructural enhancements.
