The Chandigarh Mayor election, previously scheduled for January 22, 2024, has taken an unexpected twist with the administration planning to extend voting rights to nominated councillors. In a shocking move, ahead of the election, the total number of voters is in motion to increase from 34 to 43.
According to the administration this decision, aims to have a more inclusive electoral process, but it has, instead, triggered a serious legal dispute. The AAP, holding the majority in the municipal corporation, has strongly opposed the move as they have stated that the nominated council are not elected by the public.
This comes with the AAP having 14 councillors, the BJP 12, the Congress party 6 and SAD having 1. Currently all the 7 nominated councilors are said to be from BJP background which can turn the results by making it to a total 22 votes in favour.
Earlier, the voting from nominated councilors had been denied by the court in view of the petition by former councilor Satyendra Singh stating that they should not have right to vote as they are not elected by the public.
However the opposition is in fear of a playout of some tactics of deceit by the BJP against the INDIA alliance. If there is anything like this, we will also take legal action against the same.
