PGI doctor tries to commit suicide, questions raised on the work environment.
In a shocking incident, a senior resident doctor at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) attempted suicide, claiming to be a victim of continuous harassment by an Associate Professor in the Department of Hepatology. The student, whose identity remains undisclosed, was in the first year of DM. He administered himself a midazolam injection but was fortunately stabilized in time due to the low dosage.
Before taking this drastic step, the distressed doctor penned a heart-wrenching letter, explicitly accusing the faculty member of subjecting him to victimization and relentless mistreatment. The letter highlights instances of humiliation during rounds and personal attacks, with the professor allegedly telling him to "go and drown somewhere." The letter also includes heartfelt apologies to his family, comprising his mother, father, sister, grandmother, and his beloved pet dog, Bruno.
Responding promptly to the grave situation, PGI Director, Prof Vivek Lal, has taken a proactive approach by forming a committee to investigate the matter thoroughly and is expected to submit its report within the next 72 hours.Till now, no police complaint has been filed.
This distressing incident has brought to light the critical issue of mental health and well-being among medical professionals, prompting calls for greater support and measures to address harassment and bullying within educational institutions. The PGI administration, in collaboration with relevant authorities, is expected to take immediate action to ensure the well-being and safety of its students and faculty members.
