“We must not for a moment forget, it is a birth-right of every individual to receive at least the basic education without which he cannot fully discharge his duties as a citizen.”
-Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
Every year November 11 is celebrated as the National Education Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was the first Education Minister of the independent India. To honor his efforts, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), now known as the Ministry of Education, announced this day as "National Education Day" in 2008.
According to Dr. Azad, schools are the laboratories that produce future citizens of the country. He is the person behind IITs and various other institutes in India. He was a freedom fighter, journalist, and a reformer and committed to building a nation through education. He aimed at improving the literacy rate of India by focusing on educating rural and poor adults, introduced free and compulsory education for children and especially focused on girls’ education.
Educational institutions across the country organize various events like debates, declamation, expert talks and different theme based or cultural programs on this day based on Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's achievements and teachings.
