The annexation plan was denounced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as being against international law. India refused to budge from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's words "this is not the age of war," but it did join China, Brazil, and Gabon in declining to cast a vote in the UN Security Council on a resolution denouncing Russia's annexation of territories it had seized in the past.
In the end, Russia blocked the resolution that had been proposed by Albania and the US and that would have denounced the country's poll in four areas of Ukraine, ruled the polls and encouraged all nations not to accept any seizure of territory.
Ruchira Kamboj, New Delhi's representative to the UN, underlined India's appeal for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine crisis. She also referred to the United Nations charter and emphasised the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"The Charter is clear", said the UN chief. Modi had told Putin that it was not the era of war. She expressed New Delhi’s hope for an early resumption of negotiations in order to achieve an immediate stop to hostilities and an end to the crisis.
