In a bold move aimed at safeguarding public health, Sumer Pratap Singh, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Panchkula, has taken a stand against the detrimental effects of hookah consumption by issuing a crucial notice.
Concerned about the rising prevalence of hookah usage in the region, Panchkula Police has decisively imposed restrictions on the availability of hookah in restaurants, hotels, and hookah bars. Recognizing the severe health risks associated with hookah consumption, the authorities have taken a proactive approach to protect the well-being of the community.
The ban, which comes into effect from 22nd July 2023, will be enforced for a period of 60 days, lasting until 19th August 2023. This measure, carried out under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973, and in accordance with the Constitution of India, aims to curtail the harmful effects of hookah use.
The Police's decisive action is commendable, especially considering the worrisome trends among the youth. Unfortunately, our younger generation has developed an alarming addiction to tobacco and hookahs, jeopardizing their health and well-being. A recent case study from 2021 revealed that the Tricity region ranked 3rd in hookah consumption in Punjab, with Panchkula being a prominent hub for hookah parlours.
The proactive stance taken by Sumer Pratap Singh and the Panchkula Police sends a powerful message that public health is a top priority. Through continued awareness and enforcement of such measures, we can work together to build a healthier and more vibrant society for all.
