Penalty over 16 crore has been imposed on three top government health institutions in Chandigarh by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee. These three institutes are the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PGIMER); Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32; and Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16.
This penalty is imposed as three of the institutions failed in wastewater treatment and has been discharging untreated sewage and liquid waste into the drains of Municipal Corporation since 2019 .
As per sources 3.5 million gallons of untreated sewage is being discharged per day from PGI . Whereas GMCH -32 and GMSH - 16 discharges 1.5 and 1 million gallon per day . A fine of 5.63 crores has been imposed on PGI and 5.62 crores on GMCH and GMSH . This action has been taken under the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for non-compliance of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
The committee, which imposed the fine, includes Home Secretary Nitin Yadav, Director, UT Environment Department, Debendra Dalai and Finance Secretary Vijay Namdeorao Zade. The committee said the fine was imposed after giving repeated notices to the institutes.
