Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi clarifies his controversial remarks given on Sunday referring to the Poonch terror attack, in which an IAF soldier was killed and four others injured.
The former Punjab chief minister and Congress candidate for the Jalandhar parliamentary constituency sparked outrage, when it was believed he referred the Poonch attack as a "stunt" aimed at ensuring victory for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections.
In a recent video, Channi clarified his stance, expressing pride in the bravery of Indian soldiers while emphasizing his concern about the timing of the attacks. He pointed out the similarity to the Pulwama attack before the 2019 general elections, where 40 soldiers lost their lives, yet the government failed to identify the perpetrators. Channi questioned why those responsible for such attacks are not held accountable and why there are recurrent intelligence failures.
Channi accused the BJP of callously manipulating lives and tragedies for political gain, stating, "The BJP knows how to play with people’s lives and bodies." The attack occurred when terrorists ambushed an Indian Air Force (IAF) convoy in Poonch district just three weeks before polling in the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency. He highlighted that such incidents tend to occur around the time of Lok Sabha elections every year.
He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and urged for a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
