Tomato prices in India have skyrocketed by more than 400% in recent weeks due to the irregular weather that has ravaged India during this year’s season for tomatoes, including unseasonable high rainfall in recent months, which devastated the growing crops and fuelled a deadly fungal disease.
The sharp rise in tomato prices can also be attributed to high temperature, low production and delayed rainfall in most parts of the country. The tomato crop has been damaged because of the rains, leading to a shortage in its supply and subsequent hike in prices.
Furthermore, the effect of high fuel prices on transportation costs is also being blamed.
The shortage has even hit outlets of the fast-food chain McDonald’s in India.
With traders warning that prices could hit record highs of 200 rupees a kilo in the next few days as the recent heavy monsoon rains have spoiled more stock, it is clear that the situation is far from over.
