Tricity cab drivers announce indefinite hunger strike over Safety concerns.
Cab drivers from the tricity region, including Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali, are set to stage an indefinite hunger strike starting August 10 in Sector 25. This move comes in response to rising security concerns following the recent murder of a cab driver near Mullanpur.
The cab and auto union leaders expressed dissatisfaction with both administrative authorities and cab service providers.
Drivers affiliated with Ola, Uber, and In-Driver services are participating in the protest, citing a growing sense of insecurity. The union, representing the drivers, cited issues including taxation, commission, rentals, and security as reasons for their distress.
Alleging humiliation by the companies, the union spokesperson Inderjit Singh highlighted the drivers' vulnerability to criminal activities, exacerbated by unchecked private number vehicle operations. The hunger strike, organised jointly under the banner of the Cab Auto Union Front, intends to draw attention to these pressing concerns.
The recent murder of a cab driver named Dharampal has intensified their resolve, with drivers demanding action from both the authorities and the companies. The situation remains tense as the drivers warn of escalating their protest if their grievances go unaddressed.
