Two premier institutions of Chandigarh,PGIMER and PU had earlier refused to facilitate 540 square feet (60 sq. yards) of land for an underpass which led to UT Administration to amend the design.
The road between these two is a jam-packed, heavy traffic stretch of highway, while the pedestrians rush there remains high with around a footfall of 10,000 people per day.
The UT Administration had proposed and approved a design outlay worth rupees 3 crores wayback in 2019 under VP Singh Badnore. However, due to reluctance of these institutions, there has been no progress in this direction even after 3 long years.
The heritage Committee subpanel which had approved the previous design shall rework on new suitable alternate design as soon as its Chairperson Sumit Kaur returns from the US.
The 15 metre wide underpass will have features such as escalators and elevators, landscaping on both the sides, 12 small sized shops to generate revenue. But the most beneficial and crucial aspect remains the safety of pedestrians and the smooth flow of traffic.
