"Uttarakhand Makes History with Passage of the Uniform Civil Code"
Uttarakhand has created history by passing a new law, called the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in its assembly. This law, led by the Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, is the first of its kind in India and sets common rules for marriage, divorce, inheritances, and living together for all communities except Scheduled Tribes.
CM Dhami called it a big moment, saying it would end unfair treatment of women, referring to past cases like Shah Bano and Saira Bano. But the opposition, mainly Congress MLAs, had concerns. They wanted more time to study the law and were worried about how it would affect women's safety and the rights of tribal communities.
They also questioned, why the law didn't include Hindu Undivided Families (HUF) and why tribal communities were left out. Despite these concerns, the UCC is based on a plan from a committee led by a retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, fulfilling the promise made by the BJP during the 2022 elections.
This move by Uttarakhand is groundbreaking, but it's also stirring up debates about how it will work and who it will benefit.
